Keegan-Michael Key updated ComingSoon.net on the project with Jordan Peele, Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick and Netflix.
At the Los Angeles press day for The Lion King, CS chatted about Wendell and Wild with star/producer Keegan-Michael Key. In our interview Key shared about its development and release, “It looks like it will probably be early 2021 or late 2020. It’s a stop motion so it’s a different thing. We are still in the embryonic stages of that piece. Henry has been busy writing it.”
Hot off scene-stealing scenes in Toy Story 4 with Ducky and Bunny, Wendell and Wild will be another voice-over collaboration from Key and Peele. Both are also closely developing the story with Henry Selick and playing the demon brothers, Key described their creative jam sessions for the film, “Jordan and I came in and did a session…” he shared, “…against static at recording booths, sitting looking across at Jordan and it’s lots of ideas flowing, cutting each other off to keep that organic feeling. That usually ends up on the cutting room floor as you find the voices and you want a little refinement–some rhythm. We spent a good deal of time with an initial scene that Henry wrote discovering the characters and the framework of the scene. And then he uses that as inspiration to keep writing.”
Henry Selick has said about the movie, “Wendell and Wild’ is a comedy about two scheming demon brothers who must face their arch-nemesis, the demon-dusting nun Sister Helly, and her two acolytes, the goth teens Kat and Raoul,” Acclaimed Argentinian artist Pablo Lobato will design the characters.
The film is being produced by Selick, Jordan Peele and his banner Monkeypaw, The Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Sarah Serata will co-produce with executive producers Win Rosenfeld for Monkeypaw, Peter Principato and Joel Zadak for Principato-Young, and Lindsay Williams and Eddie Gamarra for Gotham Group.
