After entering talks with Pose‘s Billy Porter to star as the fairy godmother, Sony’s upcoming re-imagining of the classic Cinderella tale has also entered talks with Frozen star Idina Menzel to star in the film as the evil stepmother, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The project is said to be a modern re-imagining of the classic fairytale of the orphaned girl (Camila Cabello) with an evil step-mother featuring a musical bent. Kay Cannon, who wrote the Pitch Perfect comedies, earned three Emmy nominations for NBC’s 30 Rock and directed last year’s comedy Blockers, will direct.
The idea for the project stems from an original pitch from late-night talk show host James Corden, who will produce alongside his Fulwell 73 partner Leo Pearlman. The studio is putting the Cinderella film on the fast-track for production. The Cinderella project will serve as Cabello’s feature acting debut, and she will also be involved in the music for the movie.

Menzel is best known for her work on Broadway with the acclaimed musical Rent and its film adaptation, as well as the Disney live-action/animated hit musical Enchanted and the acclaimed Disney family fantasy musical Frozen, and is set to reprise her lead role in the upcoming sequel, which is set to hit theaters on November 22, as well as appearing in the upcoming crime comedy-thriller Uncut Gems alongside Adam Sandler, which will debut on the big screen on December 13.
