While promoting his this weekend’s comedy/drama JoJo Rabbit, ComingSoon.net got to chat with director Taika Waititi about incorporating Jane Foster’s cancer storyline from the female Thor comics in his forthcoming Marvel Studios film Thor: Love and Thunder!
“There’s nothing funnier than cancer,” joked Waititi. “Even now I’m not sure if we’re going to continue with that storyline. I really like it. The way the stories develop at Marvel is ever-changing. We know we’ve got Jane Foster, and that’s cool as it is. I personally like the storyline where she’s fighting this illness and the whole thing with her choosing between fighting that and becoming a god. That’s cool, but it always changes. Between now and when we shoot it’s gonna change. As it did with ‘Ragnarok’! We kept changing it while we were shooting. (laughs) ‘Let’s reshoot this thing because now guess what the villain wants?’ But I did love that storyline.”

Thor: Love and Thunder will be directed by Waititi (Jojo Rabbit) which will be the followup to his wildly successful 2017 sequel Thor: Ragnarok. Natalie Portman is set to return as Jane and will wield the mighty Mjolnir. Hemsworth and Thompson will also return as Thor and Valkyrie, respectively, while Watiti will reprise Korg. The female Thor storyline is based on Jason Aaron’s run on “The Mighty Thor” in which a cancer-stricken Jane Foster takes up the mantle and powers of Thor.
The film will reportedly immediately start shooting in early 2020 in Australia after Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has wrapped its production.
