Original Zombieland 2 Script Featured a Ghostbusters Reunion

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the original script for Zombieland: Double Tap featured a Ghostbusters reunion, of sorts. Oh, and Joe Pesci was involved in some capacity.

“Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson got Bill Murray out on a golf course and were trying to convince him to do a sequel to Ghostbusters,” screenwriter Rhett Reese told the outlet. “Dan Aykroyd becomes a zombie and attacks Bill and there are golf carts going in the lake and golf clubs being swung at people.”

Unfortunately, with the passing of Ramis in 2014, the scene no longer worked. And now that a full-fledged Ghostbusters sequel is finally hitting theaters in 2020, the context of the scene doesn’t work either.

“It was really fun, but then with the passage of time, with anything else, it had to be something else,” added Reese.

Zombieland: Double Tap features the return of stars Woody Harrelson (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Jesse Eisenberg (Now You See Me), Emma Stone (La La Land) and Abigail Breslin (Scream Queens). It will also feature new characters played by Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), Zoey Deutch (Flower), Rosario Dawson (Jane the Virgin) and Luke Wilson (Old School).

In the sequel, through comic mayhem that stretches from the White House and through the heartland, these four slayers must face off against the many new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. But most of all, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.

The sequel is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom) from a screenplay written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (the Deadpool films).
