Elf is one of the most legendary holiday movies of all time and is one of the first movies people think of when they hear the name Will Ferrell. Speaking in a recent interview, the actor revealed that a sequel almost came to fruition, but never made it out.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ferrell spoke about the sequel, which was apparently written and would have paid Ferrell a whopping $29 million to reprise his role as Buddy the Elf. However, Ferrell’s decision to walk away from the film was pretty simple, and boiled down to the film just not being good.
“I would have had to promote the movie from an honest place, which would’ve been, like, ‘Oh no, it’s not good. I just couldn’t turn down that much money,’” Ferrell said. “And I thought, ‘Can I actually say those words? I don’t think I can, so I guess I can’t do the movie.’”

Despite not getting the chance to star in the sequel, Ferrell still has gone on to star in a ton of other legendary films, including the Anchorman series, 2006s’s Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and more in the future. While fans likely would have flocked to the theater for another Elf film, Ferrell instead chose to leave the original as a classic, a move that has so far paid off.
