First released on March 29, 1988, Beetlejuice tells the story of how thanks to an untimely demise via drowning, a young couple ends up as poltergeists in their New England farmhouse. When these homebody ghosts (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) try to haunt the pretentious humans who have moved into their house, they ask for help from a demonic wraith (Michael Keaton) they cannot control in this comic fantasy that mixes the quick and the dead with a laugh and a fright.

The movie also starred Winona Ryder (Edward Scissorhands), Catherine O’Hara (The Nightmare Before Christmas), Jeffrey Jones (Sleepy Hollow), and Glenn Shadix (Heathers).

A sequel is currently in development, with Tim Burton returning to direct and featuring the original cast and new additions such as Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, and Monica Belluci. It had originally been planned to be released on September 6, 2024, before the Writer’s Strike had happened.
