The Girl in the Spider’s Web is headed to the big screen
It’s been a big question whether David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo would be getting a follow-up at some point, but a multitude of factors have prevented the series from continuing on the big screen. Now, The Hollywod Reporter brings word that Sony Pictures is hoping to reset the series by skipping both The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest and moving straight to an adaptation of The Girl in the Spider’s Web.
“Spider’s Web” was published just this year and though it serves as the fourth book in the “Millennium” series, the text was written by David Lagercrantz following the tragic passing of creator Stieg Larsson. The outlet reports that Steven Knight (Eastern Promises, World War Z 2) is in talks to write the adaptation.
THR notes that Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig will not return for the film as the studio hopes to keep costs down for the film, an unlikely scenario if the pair negotiated pay raises for their sequel options. David Fincher will reportedly also not return to the director’s chair. Adding on to that, TheWrap reports that Alicia Vikander (The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Ex Machina) is the early favorite to succeed Mara in the role.
Released in December of 2011, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo brought in over $230 million worldwide, despite a $90 million budget and hard-R rating. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Actress for Rooney Mara, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Film Editing, for which it won.
The Girl in the Spider’s Web is officially described as follows: “Late one night, Blomkvist receives a phone call from a source claiming to have information vital to the United States. The source has been in contact with a young female superhacker—a hacker resembling someone Blomkvist knows all too well. The implications are staggering. Blomkvist, in desperate need of a scoop for Millennium, turns to Salander for help. She, as usual, has her own agenda. The secret they are both chasing is at the center of a tangled web of spies, cybercriminals, and governments around the world, and someone is prepared to kill to protect it…”
