Space Race: 10 Cloverfield Lane’s Dan Trachtenberg takes on the Universal spec
Universal Pictures is negotiating for the rights to the sci-fi script for Space Race, according to Variety. 10 Cloverfield Lane‘s Dan Trachtenberg is reportedly up to direct the film. Daniel Kunka (12 Rounds and the announced TV series The Ark) has written the script. Trachtenberg will produce the film, along with Dylan Clark (War for the Planet of the Apes).

Kunka and Trachtenberg have teamed up for Crime of the Century, which is currently in development at Universal as well. At the moment, we have no information about the plot outside of Deadline‘s info, which says, “it’s described as a high concept with four-quadrant tentpole potential.” That could mean anything, of course, but one can speculate about what this might be with the title Space Race. A tent pole film about space would certainly be high in the effects department. As you likely know, the term “space race” refers to the battle between the Soviet Union and the United States of America for supremacy in space flight and technology in the second half of the last century. With all the focus on Russia right now, it’s certainly one possibility. There is also the idea of alien invasion.
Trachtenberg has directed a number of commercials for Lexus, Nike, and Coca-Cola. He directed the short film Portal: No Escape, based on the video game Portal. He’s also directed the episode of the TV series Black Mirror entitled “Playtest.” Executive VP of Production Jon Mone will oversee production for Universal. Brian Williams brought the project to Clark and will oversee production.
