Outlaw King: Chris Pine to Play Robert the Bruce of Scotland

Director David Mackenzie to direct Chris Pine and Ben Foster in Scottish epic Outlaw King

Hell or High Water may have a reunion of sorts in the near future. That film’s director David Mackenzie is in talks to direct the Scottish epic Outlaw King for Netflix, according to Deadline. Chris Pine will play historic Scottish King Robert the Bruce and his Hell or High Water co-star Ben Foster will play the Scottish knight James Douglas, Robert’s closest advisor if talks go through. Netflix has yet to comment on the casting or the director.

The script for Outlaw King was written by Bash Doran (The Looming Tower). Sigma Films‘ Gillian Berrie will produce with Richard Brown and Steve Golin from Anonymous Content. The film is set to shoot in August in Scotland. You may recall Robert the Bruce from the 1995 Academy Award-winning film Braveheart with Mel Gibson, where he was played by Angus Macfadyen.

In Outlaw King, we will reportedly see Wallace, but this story is about Robert the Bruce deciding to “cast aside the comfortable trappings of his upbringing to stand up for his countrymen in a long campaign. He defied the Brits and the Catholic Church and ruthlessly consolidated rule among the squabbling noble elite of Scotland, finally rallying the forces necessary to turn back Edward II’s considerable armies to free Scotland.” There is also reportedly a love story between Robert and Elizabeth de Burgh, who is his Queen.

Pine is known for his roles in Into the Woods, the last three Star Trek films, Hell or High Water, and as the voice of Dr. Deviso in the TV series SuperMansion. He’ll be seen in the upcoming Wonder Woman as Steve Trevor and in A Wrinkle in Time. Foster, who played Pine’s brother in Hell or High Water (directed by Mackenzie), is known for his work in Warcraft where he played the wizard Medivh, 3:10 to Yuma, and Lone Survivor.
