The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Oscar nominee Bryan Cranston (Isle of Dogs, Breaking Bad) is joining Oscar winner Angelina Jolie (By the Sea, Maleficent) in Walt Disney Pictures’ live-action/animated hybrid The One and Only Ivan.
The Disney movie is an adaptation of the Newbery Medal-winning book written by Katherine Applegate that was published by HarperCollins in 2011. The illustrated novel is inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan and is told from his point-of-view. Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.
Cranston will play the owner of the mall, a man who abuses his animals as he forces them to act for customers. Jolie will voice Stella the elephant while Oscar-nominated actor Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) has been cast as Ivan.
Jolie will produce The One and Only Ivan alongside Brigham Taylor with the late Allison Shearmur retaining a producer credit. Thea Sharrock (Me Before You) is directing from a script by Mike White (School of Rock). The movie also stars Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project) and Ariana Greenblatt (Stuck in the Middle).
