According to French outlet Charente Libre (via The Playlist), the next feature from acclaimed filmmaker Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, Moonrise Kingdom) will be a musical set in post-World War II France. Wes Anderson’s next movie is currently scouting locations in the area of Angoulême in southwestern France.

The area of Angoulême where the currently untitled project will shoot was heavily bombed during the war, including the destruction of a major railway station which had to be reconstructed in the years after. Anderson’s 2014 hit The Grand Budapest Hotel was set during the onset of fascism in Europe just prior to World War II.
While plot and cast are currently unknown, the idea of Anderson making a musical set in France is not completely out of left field. He previously made the Darjeeling Limited-adjeacent short Hotel Chevalier in 2007, which featured Jason Schwartzman and Natalie Portman in a Paris hotel. He also made a series of 2008 commercials (see them HERE and HERE) for Softbank starring Brad Pitt and shot in France which paid tribute to French filmmaker Jacques Tati. It is also common knowledge that the Jacques Demy musicals The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort had a major influence on the look and feel of Anderson’s films, and Anderson has lived in Paris for many years.
Anderson’s most recent film, the stop-motion animated sci-fi fantasy Isle of Dogs was a critical hit and earned $63 million worldwide.
