Pinocchio Teaser Sets Late 2022 Debut for Netflix’s Stop-Motion Musical

Netflix finally dropped the first Pinocchio teaser trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s long-in-development film adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s classic 1883 Italian novel of the same name. The stop-motion animated fantasy film will be making its debut later this year sometime in December.

The Pinocchio teaser trailer features Ewan McGregor voicing Sebastian J. Cricket, who is expected to be the reimagined story’s narrator.

Described as a reimagination of the classic tale, Netflix’s Pinocchio is a stop-motion animated musical that will follow the adventures of a wooden boy in his pursuit of a place in the world. It will feature a star-studded voice ensemble led by newcomer Gregory Mann as the titular wooden boy, Ewan McGregor as Jiminy Cricket, and David Bradley as Geppetto.

“Set during the rise of Fascism in Mussolini’s Italy, the film is a story of love and disobedience as Pinocchio struggles to live up to his father’s expectations,” reads the logline.

Additional cast includes Academy Award winners Tilda Swinton (Isle of Dogs), Christoph Waltz (Epic), and Cate Blanchett (How to Train Your Dragon films) along with Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), John Turturro (The Batman), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Tim Blake Nelson (Watchmen) and Burn Gorman (Enola Holmes).

Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro, who has been attached to the project since 2018 is co-directing Pinocchio along with Mark Gustafson (Fantastic Mr. Fox). It is written by Del Toro and Patrick McHale, with a score by Alexandre Desplat. It hails from The Jim Henson Company, which worked with Netflix on 2019’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

Producers are del Toro, The Jim Henson Company’s Lisa Henson & Blanca Lista, ShadowMachine’s Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico, Exile Entertainment’s Gary Ungar, and Gris Grimly.
