July 11, 2017: This Week on Blu-ray, DVD, 4K and Digital HD

Go behind the scenes of July 11 releases The Fate of the Furious and Smurfs: The Lost Village

We’re kicking off the week with behind-the-scenes looks at two of July 11th’s major releases: The Fate of the Furious and Smurfs: The Lost Village. In the top player below, you can explore the “moving on faith” side of Universal Pictures’ high octane franchise (also available in 4K and as part of an eight-movie collection). Then, in the bottom player, you can see an “audition reel” for Sony Pictures Animation‘s fully animated take on the family franchise. The Lost Village also arrives in a 4K edition.

Other recent big screen releases coming home July 11 include James Gray’s The Lost City of Z and Their Finest, a surprisingly light-hearted romantic comedy set in England during World War II. There’s also an original animated adventure with Spark: A Space Tail and, on DVD and Digital HD, the crime thriller London Heist.

Celebrating its 40th Anniversary, there’s a new Blu-ray edition of Hal Needham’s Smokey and the Bandit.

Shout! Factory continues its special edition treatment of cult horror films. Having already released all of the franchise’s sequels, the Scream Factory label delivers a special edition of 1995’s Species. A new 4K scan of the alien thriller is backed by an entire Blu-ray disc of bonus content. The release includes two different audio commentary tracks, including one that features star Natasha Henstridge!

Also from Shout!, look for a much older kind of sci-fi terror with Edgar G. Ulmer’s 1951 The Man from Planet X!

Warner Archive this week brings to Blu-ray John Wayne and Lana Turner in John Farrow’s 1955 WWII adventure The Sea Chase. Then, Doris Day is getting some love on DVD with DVD rereleases of four of her films: 1950’s Tea For Two, 1951’s On Moonlight Bay, 1952’s The Winning Team and 1953’s By the Light of the Silvery Moon.

The Criterion Collection this week brings to Blu-ray Robert Bresson’s final film, the 1983 crime drama L’Argent. Meanwhile, they are upgrading to Blu-ray their Roberto Rossellini’s War Trilogy, which includes 1945’s Rome Open City, 1946’s Paisan and 1948’s Germany Year Zero.

Small screen selections hitting July 11 include the recent Doctor Who spinoff Class, the second season of Syfy‘s The Magicians and, on DVD only, the second season of WGN America‘s Underground.

In addition to 4K versions of The Fate of the Furious and Smurfs: The Lost Village, July 11 sees Peter Jackson’s King Kong and Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element debut on the Ultra HD format.

Finally, on Digital HD the week brings Barry Levinson’s Bernie Madoff biopic as Robert De Niro headlines The Wizard of Lies. Chris Evans gets caught up in a custody battle for his genius niece in Marc Webb’s Gifted, and Zach Braff directs a trio of elderly talent who plan on Going in Style.
