How Much Prison Time Did Anna Sorokin Serve?

There have been a lot of debates around Anna Sorokin, a wealthy heiress, showcasing her skills as a con artist. From 2013 to 2017, Sorokin stormed the nation’s super-rich, fooling them with her schemes. Infiltrating the upper-class New York social and art scenes, she lived a lavish life.

Over four years, Sorokin met some of the richest people in the US and began impressing them with her lavish lifestyle. Soon, everyone’s attention turned to her lavish activities, and people began to suspect her. Between 2016 and 2017, Sorokin tricked New York’s super-rich, hotels, and banks, obtaining approximately $275,000.

In 2017, the authorities finally nabbed Anna Sorokin after one of her former friends assisted the police. Multiple charges led to her conviction, and authorities sent her to prison. Since her arrest and conviction, Sorokin has fueled discussions in pop culture, with people proposing different theories about who she was. However, it’s interesting to note that she didn’t receive a severe punishment for her crimes.

Convicted con artist Anna Sorking was released from prison

In March 2019, the trial of Anna Sorokin commenced, and almost a month later, the jury pronounced her guilty on multiple charges. The court sentenced Sorokin to four to 12 years in prison, including the time she had spent behind bars before the trial. However, she only served two years of the sentence and was granted parole for good behavior.

But Sorokin’s problems persisted, and six weeks after her release, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) took her into custody again for overstaying her visa. ICE held Sorokin in custody for a year, and reports suggested that she might face deportation back to Germany. However, she didn’t leave the ICE facility and ultimately, her deportation failed. She and her team of lawyers filed a motion to put a stay on her deportation.

In October 2022, Sorokin was finally released from ICE facility and was told to post a $10,000 bail. Additionally, she will remain in home confinement and not use any form of social media. As of now, Anna Sorokin is under house arrest, residing in New York City.

Netflix decided to make a series on her case because her story is undoubtedly fascinating. Titled Inventing Anna, the series stars Emmy award winner Julia Garner as the titular character. Currently streaming on Netflix, the streaming platform paid Sorokin $320,000 for her story.
