Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s ex-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, is now serving a life sentence without parole for Dee Dee Blanchard’s 2015 murder. The duo reportedly planned to murder Blanchard’s mother Dee Dee, and it was Godejohn who stabbed her to death. Police found the victim’s body at Blanchards’ Missouri home on June 15, 2015. Following this, they both faced first-degree murder and felony armed criminal action charges.
People Magazine reported that Dee Dee was mentally and physically abusive towards Blanchard throughout her life. The mother convinced everyone that Gypsy was a terminally ill teenager with the mind of a seven-year-old. She even fabricated the teen’s medical issues, and the truth only surfaced after Dee Dee’s murder by Godejohn.
Blanchard‘s boyfriend, Godejohn, stood trial in late 2018, and a jury convicted him of murder. He received a life sentence without parole the following year.
Where is Nicholas Godejohn now?
According to the Missouri Department of Corrections, Nicholas Godejohn is currently serving his sentence at the Potosi Correctional Center. He is not eligible for parole as per the sentence her received after his trial in 2019. Entertainment Tonight further confirmed that Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Nick Godejohn have since separated. Moreover, the former got engaged to Ryan Scott Anderson, whom she met as a pen pal while in jail. The duo reportedly tied the knot on June 27, 2022.
Harper’s Bazaar further elaborated on Godejohn and Blanchard’s relationship before the murder. The duo met on a Christian dating site and talked online for two years before meeting in person. The couple had their first in-person date at the movies in 2015. Their second meet-up was in June 2015, when Godejohn traveled from Wisconsin to Missouri to kill Dee Dee.
Blanchard once told ABC News, “[Dee Dee] got jealous, because I was spending a little too much attention on him [Godejohn]. She had ordered me to stay away from him. Needless to say, that was a very long argument that lasted a couple weeks. Yelling, throwing things, calling me names: bitch, slut, whore.”
Testifying at Godejohn’s late 2018 trial, Blanchard gave a detailed account of their plan to murder Dee Dee. Her then-boyfriend had traveled to Missouri, checked into a motel, and waited for Blanchard to text him after her mother went to bed. After getting the green signal, Godejohn went to their house, where she gave him the murder weapon (a knife), gloves, and duct tape. Gypsy claimed she hid in the bathroom while Godejohn stabbed her mother to death.
Nicholas Godejohn, who had no history of violence before the murder, told ABC 20/20, “I felt horrible about it. When me and her were in the hotel room … she [Blanchard] kept on telling me, ‘Stop crying, stop crying. There’s no reason, reason to cry. It was my idea, it wasn’t yours. I … did what I did because I loved her. I really wanted a life with her, I really did.”
At his sentencing hearing in February 2019, Godejohn reiterated his motive to commit the crime, “I was blindly in love. That was always very much the case.” He received life without parole in prison with an additional concurrent sentence of 25 years on the charge of armed criminal action.
Meanwhile, prosecutors offered Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who had been a victim of abuse, a plea deal. In 2016, she pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for her role in the murder and received a 10-year prison sentence. She will be released on December 28, 2023, after serving 85% of her sentence, per People Magazine.
HBO’s Mommy Dead and Dearest is one of the most popular documentaries that covers the infamous case. Lifetime’s upcoming documentary The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard is set to release in 2024. Recently, a Hulu series titled The Act, starring Joey King, also chronicles the same.
