In the previous episode of Starz’s Outlander, the Frasers decided to settle in North Carolina instead of sailing back to Scotland. Back in the present, Brianna and Roger argued at a Scottish festival. In Outlander season 4 episode 4, Claire, Jamie, and Ian broke ground on Fraser’s Ridge.
The Deed
Jamie signed a deed with Governor Tryon for 10,000 acres of land. Tryon indicated that while the Regulators were refusing to pay taxes, these taxes were also not reaching the Treasury. He warned Jamie about being discerning when finding settlers. Fergus would be recruiting them; Jamie wanted Highlanders. When Marsali had her baby, they would join them.
“Oftentimes, Man Is Monster”
The Frasers staked the boundaries of the land and their cabin. However, Native Americans, who appeared to be Cherokee, returned their stakes. One night, their food, which was tied up in a tree, was taken and a horse had claw marks. Jamie went to see John Quincy Meyers, who gave them the jerked meat he was making. Meyers had heard the Cherokee speak of “Tskili Yona”, and “yona” means “bear”.
In the night, they found Meyers with deep slashes in his chest, muttering “Tskili Yona”. Jamie went after the bear with his rifle, while Ian helped Claire save Meyers. Claire discovered a bite on Meyers that was from a human. The bear that Jamie went after was a human wearing a bear fur and claw-like weapons on his hands. Jamie killed him with one of the boundary stakes.
White Raven
The next morning, Jamie brought Tskili Yona to the Cherokee village. Tawodi, a Cherokee who spoke English, explained that the man had been banished for raping a woman. He had gone crazy in isolation in the woods.
Back at the campsite, Meyers appeared to be doing well and was staying with them until he was fully healed. The Cherokee returned, and Tawodi introduced Jamie to their chief, Nawohali. Jamie would be known to them as “Yona Dihi”, or “bear killer”. Jamie invited the visitors to join them by the fire. Claire spoke with Giduhwa and her husband’s grandmother, Adawehi. Adawehi, a fellow healer, had dreamed about Claire as a white raven and indicated she hasn’t yet achieved the true potential of her healing abilities.
American Settlers
In 1971, Roger noticed a picture of Fraser’s Ridge in the book Brianna gave him about Scottish settlers in North Carolina. He contacted the book’s author, Karen Bailey, and in turn, she sent him pictures and copies of documents about Fraser’s Ridge, including the deed. Roger called Brianna to tell her that Claire found Jamie and settled in North Carolina and that the Scottish festival they had gone to was in Fraser’s Ridge.
Roger went back to Inverness to pick up the last few boxes from Fiona. Surprisingly, she had known that Claire had gone back through the stones this whole time. Fiona showed Roger a document she had found, an obituary for Jamie and his wife, who died in a fire on their settlement. The smudged date appeared to be in the 1770s. Roger called Brianna again, but her roommate told her that she had left for Scotland to visit her mother a couple week prior.
