In the previous episode of BoJack Horseman, Princess Carolyn revisited her childhood home and reflected on her own teenage pregnancy. A Leather Jacket
We learn about the warped sense of gender roles that were enforced upon BoJack as a child by his father. BoJack then discussed how he gets upset by how people ask about his day. BoJack, as it turns out, was giving this speech at his mother’s funeral. He then launched into a more traditional eulogy for his mother. BoJack discussed some of the things he was happy about not having to deal with anymore. He also related how his mother was mostly emotionally absent and learned about love and parenting from television.
BoJack talked about how he never felt loved by his mother, and how he wished that he could have felt that for just one day. He the discussed the painful, yet touching final moments of his mother’s life. His mother finally acknowledged his existence in the final seconds of her life. BoJack spent a while discussing whether or not his mother’s final words truly meant anything and he finally settled on the fact that it did not.
Reading Into It
BoJack related a fan interaction he had with a big fan of Horsin’ Around. This fan had read deeply into a metaphor the show was going for, and BoJack noted that the fan made it up on their own. BoJack then discussed the death of his father. His father had died as a result of the injuries he sustained in a duel. BoJack’s father had offered to fight anyone that disliked his novel. One critic disliked it and fought BoJack’s father and BoJack’s father died. BoJack talked about how his mother felt worse when his father died.
He talked about how he had to perform for his mother. BoJack was forced to participate in his mother’s dance routine. BoJack related how much he truly hated his mother for the cold, and unemotional way she treated him. He then talked about his new show. BoJack related his recent near-death experience and reflected on how fragile life truly is. He then talked about his father and how much he hated his father.
Final Reflection
BoJack discussed how much he felt Horsin’ Around let audiences down. He talks about how a particular season finale, where one character left and then returned to the show because of television convenience. BoJack then explained that television is truly a mirror to realty because there is never a truly happy ending. BoJack assumed that his mother would be very upset with him for the complete sham of a funeral that was being held. He wrapped up with the painful observation that his relationship with his mother could never get better.
