Legends of Tomorrow season 4 episode 8 is part two of the mid-season finale. The episode picks up where the previous episode left off, with Constantine changing his own history by breaking up with Desmond in order to save Desmond from being possessed by Neron and being sent to hell. The change to history returns Charlie’s shapeshifting powers, but leaves Zari transformed into a cat.
Custodians of Chronology
By saving Desmond, Constantine never joined the Legends in the new timeline. That means that he wasn’t at Woodstock to help the Legends defeat the unicorn, resulting in Sara’s death. Ava goes into mourning by hiding in her office at the Time Bureau. Without their captain, Nate, Ray, Mick, and Garima become the ruthless Custodians of Chronology, hunting and killing any magical creature they can find. Charlie tries to get the Custodians to just capture the magical creatures, but they’re not taking any chances after the unicorn killed Sara.
Charlie and Zari free Constantine from a cell at the Time Bureau, where he is losing his mind because both the original timeline and the new timeline are fighting for space in his head. Zari insists that they need to fix the timeline in New Orleans, where Constantine broke history. Charlie doesn’t want to lose her powers again, so she suggests they just go back and save Sara from the unicorn.
Sirens of Space-Time
Checking on the repaired timeline, Charlie learns that though Sara survived the unicorn, Nate, Ray, and Mick were killed by the fairy godmother the Legends encountered because Constantine still never joined the team. As a result, Ava, Sara, and Gideon become the Sirens of Space-Time, ruthlessly hinting and killing all magical creatures they find. As with the Custodians, Charlie tries to convince the Sirens to have some empathy for the creatures, but the Sirens aren’t having it, either.
Once again, Zari insists that Constantine fix his mess, but Charlie wins out, convincing Constantine to let her save the guys from the fairy godmother. The group returns to 1620 Salem, where Charlie takes the form of the fairy and tricks Prudence into breaking her bond with her fairy godmother.
Puppets of Tomorrow
Unfortunately, the freed fairy bonded with Mick, who had her turn the Legends into singing child-television puppets. Mick and his new partner returned to a life of crime. This sets Constantine, Charlie, and Zari on a series of missions to continue to bandage the timeline until they arrive at one where none of the Legends have died.
The timeline might be repaired, somewhat, but all the fractured histories jostling about in his brain are killing Constantine. Zari convinces Constantine that he has to go back and mend his relationship with Desmond, even though that means Desmond will bind his soul to Neron and suffer an eternity in hell. Charlie, however, refuses to give up her powers without a fight.
As Constantine is fixing things with Desmond, Sara orders the Legends to kill him on the chance that the Constantine they have the drop on is the shapeshifter. Charlie outs herself as the shapeshifter to Sara, who tries to kill Charlie again and again. Charlie realizes that what was missing from each of the various timelines was that without Constantine, the Legends never caught her, thus they never learned empathy for magical creatures.
With the timeline fixed, Constantine, Charlie, and Zari rejoin the Legends aboard the Waverider. Constantine comes clean to Sara, who says that the team has his back. Constantine says Neron doesn’t just want to win, he’ll try to make as big and painful of a mess as he can.
On the golf course, Hank gets a call that the kaupe escaped from the men in black working for him on Project Hades. Hank answers to his boss, who is Neron appearing as Desmond.
