Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine, is developing the series, currently entitled Kin, which will follow three generations of women in one family whose lives are thrown into upheaval when their controversial matriarch moves back into their town.

“Davita has written a script that is utterly original, complex and incredibly nuanced. She deftly explores issues around identity and the secrets family members keep to protect themselves and one another,” Witherspoon said. “I’m so excited to team up with Starz to bring these strong, memorable female characters to life on screen.”

The 42-year-old actress/producer has been making a big push into television that began with 2017’s HBO drama Big Little Lies, for which she was an executive producer on and was nominated for both a Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy for her performance. The series earned a somewhat surprising second season renewal from the cable network and is set to premiere sometime in June.

She has also signed on to star and executive produce the upcoming Apple ensemble drama series The Morning Show, in which she will star alongside Steve Carrell (Vice), Jennifer Aniston (Dumplin’), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (The Cloverfield Paradox), Mark Duplass (The League) and Billy Crudup (Justice League), which began filming in October.

“The opportunity to work in partnership with Davita Scarlett as well as Reese Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine on this series is serendipitous,” Starz Programming president Carmi Zlotnik said. “Hello Sunshine puts women at the forefront of the stories they are telling, and that fits perfectly into Starz’ overall programming strategy to offer compelling content that appeals to female audiences.”
