It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia follows the misguided dreams and blundered schemes of The Gang — Mac, Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Charlie (Day), Sweet Dee (Kaitlin Olson) and Frank (Danny DeVito) — as they try to navigate life, love, and their long-suffering bar, Paddy’s Pub.
Season 13 of the series ended with Mac (Rob McElhenney) finally coming out of the closet, a years-long payoff that managed to subvert audience expectations while still remaining true to the show’s distinctive mean streak. This opens up a number of possibilities for where the show could go, as Mac’s own repressed sexuality was the subject of running gags going back to the very first episode.
