Aguirre-Sacasa’s The Shelley Society Gets Pilot Order at HBO Max

According to Deadline, HBO Max has given a pilot order to Riverdale universe creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s forthcoming gothic horror and teen romance series titled The Shelley Society, which will be based on iconic English gothic novelist Mary Shelley.

In addition, Aguirre-Sacasa is reportedly also developing another drama series titled The Brides, which is being described as a new take on the Brides of Dracula. It will be a family drama centered on a trio of powerful and diverse female leads. The project will be the first non-Riverdale collaboration between Aguirre-Sacasa and Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions with Berlanti and Sarah Schecter set to executive produce.

Described as a Victorian X-Files, The Shelley Society will be following young author Mary Shelley as she leads band of Romantic outlaws—among them, her lovers Percy and the Lord Byron—against all manner of supernatural threats and monsters…including Shelley’s own iconic creature, Frankenstein.

Mary Shelley is best known for writing the classic 1818 gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus which had given birth to one of the most legendary monsters of all time.

The Shelley Society will be written and executive produced by Aguirre-Sacasa along with Riverdale writers Tessa Leigh Williams and James DeWille. Aguirre-Sacasa will also be serving as the series’ showrunner.

The two projects are part of Aguirre-Sacasa’s multi-year overall deal with Warner Bros. Television.
