Henry Cavill surprised fans by stepping down from The Witcher franchise, so it would make sense for the upcoming season to not necessarily feature a true send-off for the actor. According to showrunner and series creator Lauren Hissrich, however, the upcoming third season will be as big of a send-off as it can be.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly recently, Hissrich mentioned that the upcoming third season feels like “the most heroic send-off” that the team behind the series could do for Cavill.
“Henry has given so much to the show and so we want to honor that appropriately,” Hissrich said, before mentioning that the fourth book in The Witcher series, Time of Contempt, is one that they’re partly adapting for Season 3 and that it fits very well with what’s going on with Cavill. “What is so interesting is that Season 3, to me, is the closest thing that we’ve done as a one-to-one adaptation of the books. Obviously, we can’t do every page, but Time of Contempt gave us so many big action events, plot points, defining character moments, huge reveals of a big bad. There’s so much to do that we were able to stick really, really closely with the books.”
Hissrich also briefly talked about what Cavill’s Geralt will be up to in the third season, noting that his biggest change is giving up his neutrality and actively putting himself into situations now. For Hissrich, that’s where the most heroic send-off comes from, with Geralt now having a new mission in his mind.
“Geralt’s big turn is about giving up neutrality and doing anything that he has to do to get to Ciri,” said Hissrich. “And to me, it’s the most heroic send-off that we could have, even though it wasn’t written to be that. Geralt has a new mission in mind when we come back to him in Season 4. He’s a slightly different Geralt than we expected. Now, by the way, that’s an understatement.”
Based on the stories and novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher is created and executive produced by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who also serves as the showrunner. Sean Daniel and Jason Brown of Sean Daniel Company are executive producing, along with Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko of Platige Image.
