Lionsgate Television and 20th Television have teamed up to develop its second The Rookie spin-off for ABC, based on the popular Nathan Fillion-led police procedural drama. This comes after over a year since the show’s first spin-off — The Rookie: Feds, starring Niecy Nash-Betts — was cancelled after one season.
The untitled spin-off will be written the original series’ creator Alexi Hawley (The Recruit), who is also set to serve as an executive producer along with Fillion, Bill Norcross, and Michelle Chapman. It is a production by Lionsgate Television and 20th Television. Further details about the new project’s cast are still under wraps.
What is the second The Rookie spin-off about?
“Set in Washington state, the second The Rookie spinoff follows a male cop who is stepping into a new phase of life in his second act. It keeps the major midlife change concept of the Los Angeles-set original series, which started off with Nathan Fillion‘s John Nolan switching careers to become the oldest rookie in the LAPD,” reads the initial synopsis (via Deadline).
The original series is currently on its second season at the moment, which will start airing on January 30, 2025. The cast also includes Richard T. Jones as Wade Grey, Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez, Titus Makin Jr. as Jackson West, Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen, Afton Williamson as Talia Bishop, Shawn Ashmore as Wesley Evers, Mekia Cox as Nyla Haper, Eric Winter as Tim Bradford, Jenna Dewan as Bailey Nune, more. Executive producers are Mark Gordon, Liz Friedlander, Mark Gordon, Nicholas Pepper, William Norcross, Jon Steinberg, and more.
