NBC is taking on a Nancy Drew series after CBS gave it a shot last season
NBC is developing the series Nancy Drew, inspired by the books written under the pen name Carolyn Keene, according to Deadline. The show is coming to us from Doubt creators Tony Phelan and Joan Rater, producer Dan Jinks and CBS TV Studios. CBS tried to develop the project last season with Phelan, Rater and Jinks. CBS Television Studios is still producing the series.
When the author of the most famous female teen detective book series is thrust into a real-life murder mystery, who does she turn to for help? Her two best friends from childhood, who were the inspiration for all those books and the women who have a real ax to grind about the way their supposed best friend chose to portray them all those years ago.
The original concept would reportedly have been focused on an adult Drew working as a detective for the NYPD. The pilot starred Sarah Shahi (Person of Interest) as the titular character. She is not involved in the version from NBC.
The character of Nancy Drew was created by publisher Edward Stratemeyer to go along with his Hardy Boys book series. The books were written by a series of ghostwriters and published under the pen name Carolyn Keene. The character first appeared in 1930 and evolved over the years with the culture. Depending on the version of the story, Nancy Drew is either 16- or 18-years-old and is an amateur detective. She is often helped by her best friends, cousins Bess Marvin and George Fayne, both of whom are women. It can be assumed that the friends of the author in the series are the people upon whom she bases Bess and George.
