House of Cards Spinoffs May Happen at Netflix

House of Cards spinoffs in the works at Netflix

Earlier today, it was announced that the Netflix series House of Cards would be ending after its sixth season. That may not be all we see from the series, however. According to Variety, there are House of Cards spinoffs in the works. Netflix and producer Media Rights Capital are reportedly in early development on a number of House of Cards spinoffs, including one involving Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly) that has Eric Roth as a writer. Roth was an executive producer on the show for the first four seasons. There are two other spinoff ideas that are being looked at as well. Neither Netflix or Media Rights Capital have commented.

The series, which has garnered over 50 Primetime Emmy nominations over the years, will conclude in 2018. Production on the new season has also commenced this month in Maryland.

The announcement of the show’s ending comes one day after sexual assault allegations against star Kevin Spacey, first reported by BuzzFeed. Spacey responded to the allegations on Twitter.

The fifth season of the critically-acclaimed drama premiered in May of this year. Spacey (as Francis Underwood) and Robin Wright (as Claire Underwood) lead a cast that includes Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Neve Campbell, Derek Cecil, Paul Sparks and Joel Kinnaman.

Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese, showrunners for Season 5 of the series, are set to return. They serve as executive producers along with David Fincher, John Mankiewicz, Daniel Minahan, Kevin Spacey, Joshua Donen, Dana Brunetti, Eric Roth, Robin Wright, Michael Dobbs and Andrew Davies. Based on the book House of Cards by Michael Dobbs and the UK series of the same name, Netflix’s version of the series was created for television by Beau Willimon.

House of Cards is produced by Donen/Fincher/Roth and Trigger Street Productions, Inc. in association with Media Rights Capital for Netflix.
