Ahead of the new season, and fresh off of 13 Emmy Award nominations, Netflix has released the first official photo from season 3 of The Crown, offering a first look at Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II. Colman steps into the role played by Claire Foy in the first two seasons of the series, now playing an older version of the Queen in the series. Check out the full photo in the gallery below!
“I am so thrilled to be part of The Crown,” Colman said previously. “I was utterly gripped watching it, proper ‘Just one more’ feeling. I think Clarie Foy is an absolute genius, she’s an incredibly hard act to follow, I’m basically going to rewatch every episode and copy her!”
Joining Colman in the new seasons will be Tobias Menzies as her husband Pricne Philip and Erin Doherty (Call the Midwife) as Princess Anne.
The Crown, a Netflix original series, tells the inside story of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, as the fragile social order established after the Second World War breaks apart. Based on the award-winning play, “The Audience,” the series reunites creator/writer Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) with director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) and producer Andy Harries (The Queen).
Beginning with soldiers in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces fighting an illegal war in Egypt, and ending with the downfall of her third Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan, after a devastating scandal, the second season bears witness to the end of the age of deference, and ushers in the revolutionary era of the 1960s. The Crown continues to chronicle the major political and global events that have defined and shaped the second half of the twentieth century – a series that is unprecedented in its scale, ambition and creative vision.
Season three of The Crown is set to debut on Netflix in 2019 and has already been renewed for a fourth season.
