In the previous episode of Netflix’s Disenchantment, Bean found the Eternity Pendant, which might contain the secret to immortality. What does the next installment have in store? Let’s find out as we recap Disenchantment season 1 episode 9 ‘To Thine Own Elf Be True’!
Immortality?
Zog was pacing nervously, fearing that Bean had died on her adventure. The newsboy announced the return of Bean much to Zog’s relief. Bean, Sorcerio, Elfo, and Luci arrived back at the castle with the Eternity Pendant in tow. Sorcerio immediately performed the ceremony, but were unsure of its success. They tried it again on a commoner and it turned out that the immortality spell did not work. The group concluded that Elfo is not a true-born elf.
Zog banished Elfo from Dreamland, as he had been lying to Zog about being an elf. Bean attempted to reason with her father about Elfo’s banishment, which resulted in Bean being imprisoned. Odval freed Bean and allowed her to go find Elfo. Bean and Luci went off to the forest, where Elfo had been wandering. The three eventually re-united and Elfo decided that he needs to go back to Elfwood and learn the truth of his parentage.
Return to Elfwood
Elfo found the gate leading to Elfwood and the group are welcomed in. The elves within Elfwood were surprised when they laid eyes upon Bean. The elves were initially scared of Bean, but they accepted her once she offered them some alcohol. Elfo confronted his father about the true identity of his mother.
A group of knights stormed into Elfwood in order to procure some elf blood, that was needed for the Elixir of Life. Meanwhile, Elfo’s father had given Elfo a letter explaining Elfo’s mother’s identity, but it was knocked into the river by a group of elves attempting to escape from the knights. Elfo led the elves in battle against the knights. Through a variety of guerrilla tactics, the elves fought off the knights, and forced a retreat. The knights, accompanied by Odval soon returned and laid siege to Elfwood.
Motherhood
Bean, Elfo, and Luci were forced to close the gate to Elfwood by hand, from the outside, in order to save the elves. This left Bean, Elfo, and Luci in the forest with Odval, but saved Elfwood from certain destruction. Elfo was shot with an arrow and died in Bean’s arms. Odval, Bean, and Luci returned to the castle and Bean laid Elfo in front of her mother’s statue. Zog apologized to Bean for the reckless mission that killed Elfo.
Zog revealed to Bean that Dagmar, Bean’s mother, did not actually die, but was turned into stone by poison. He had been trying to find the Elixir of Life, in order to restore Dagmar to life. Bean realized that it was her own fault that Dagmar was turned to stone and Bean wiped tears from her face, and saw that elf blood had gotten on her handkerchief. There was only one drop of blood so Bean had to decide between using to restore her mother or Elfo. Bean decided to give it to her mother, the Eternity Pendant functioned as expected and restored Bean’s mother to life.
