CM Punk has seemingly teased his rumored return to WWE in an Instagram Story. Since being fired from AEW by its president Tony Khan, there has been much speculation that Punk will make a shocking WWE comeback — and Punk now seems to be leaning into those rumors.
CM Punk fuels WWE comeback rumors
CM Punk took to Instagram to share a screenshot of a panel from ‘Doomquest,’ a 1981 Iron Man story arc that briefly saw the superhero teaming with villain Doctor Doom. The panel shared by Punk sees Iron Man and Doom forming a truce, in which the pair agree to work together for 24 hours.
Iron Man says in the panel: “So from that moment, our truce will extend for twenty-four hours, during which neither of us will launch any aggression against the other, either personally or indirectly, agreed?”
The comic’s unlikely alliance seems to hint at reports of CM Punk’s alleged talks with WWE, with Wrestling Observer Newsletter‘s Dave Meltzer claiming that negotiations are underway but no deal has been confirmed by the two parties. Given Punk’s tumultuous history with the WWE — the ‘Straight Edge Superstar’ filed a lawsuit against then-WWE physician Dr. Chris Amann back in 2014 — his return to the company would be controversial.
Is CM Punk coming back to WWE?
For now, it’s unknown whether or not CM Punk is returning to the WWE. If such a deal were to happen, many have speculated that he would return at the upcoming Survivor Series event. Given that it’s being held in Punk’s birthplace of Chicago, it makes sense that his comeback would take place here, though nothing is official at the time of this writing.
Punk was fired by AEW after just two years of working in the company. While his run was relatively successful, it was plagued by backstage controversies, including very public conflicts with fellow wrestlers ‘Hangman’ Adam Page, Kenny Omega, and the Young Bucks. The final straw for Punk’s AEW career came following a reported physical altercation with Jack Perry during the company’s 2023 All In event in London.
