Stone Cold Steve Austin has commented on a potential dream match with CM Punk after the Best in the World’s return to WWE. In a chat with Marc Raimondi of ESPN, Stone Cold said that he would never say never to another match.
During the interview, a discussion about Punk came up, and Stone Cold said it would be a good one and joked they could do it if Punk could take a Stunner. Austin stated, “I like Punk, and I think Punk likes me — so, as long as he can take a (Stone Cold) Stunner (laughs). I consider him a great friend, a great guy and a great wrestler who’s had a great career. We’ll see.”
Meanwhile, there is no word on when Stone Cold Steve Austin will return to WWE programming. As far as CM Punk is concerned, he is currently sidelined with a torn triceps, an injury he suffered at the Royal Rumble during his first WWE TV match in a decade.
Fans may recall that Punk also famously got into a quick verbal confrontation with Austin backstage on RAW in 2011. In 2012, Punk and Austin sat down with Jim Ross for a sit-down interview while promoting the WWE 13 video game, and, in a must-see moment, JR asked Austin about a dream match between the two legends of the squared circle.
Stone Cold Steve Austin on returning to WWE in-ring action
WWE Hall of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin, who dominated the Attitude Era as the face of the promotion, shocked fans by announcing his retirement from professional wrestling at WrestleMania 19 in 2003, following a storied match against The Rock. Fast forward to 2022, and nearly two decades later, Austin made a thrilling return to the WWE ring. At WrestleMania 38, he competed in a no-holds-barred match against Kevin Owens, emerging victorious in a highly anticipated showdown.
In the same interview, speaking about his future in WWE, Austin reflected on his return after a 19-year hiatus. He fought Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38, a match that marked his unexpected comeback. He stated, “I said I’d never get in a ring again unless all the stars aligned. And for some reason, somehow, they all did. And at the age of 57, I headlined the first night of WrestleMania. I never thought I’d do that. If you’d have told me that when I retired in (2003), I’d have said, ‘You’re crazy. So I’m not gonna sit here and say no to anything, because you never say never in this crazy business of sports entertainment.”
It will be interesting to see if Austin decides to make his return once more to the WWE ring, especially now that CM Punk is also back in the promotion. Fans might finally get to see the dream match between Austin and Punk.
