Cline, who also produced and co-wrote the adapted screenplay for 2018’s Ready Player One based on his first book in the series, sent the details to Wil Wheaton who was moderating the panel for NYCC. Wheaton, who will also be narrating the sequel’s audiobook, shared the following from Cline:
“Days after winning OASIS founder James Halliday’s contest, Wade Watts makes a discovery that changes everything. Hidden within Halliday’s vaults, waiting for his heir to find, lies a technological advancement that will once again change the world and make the OASIS a thousand times more wondrous–and addictive–then even Wade dreamed possible. With it comes a new riddle, and a new quest–a last Easter egg from Halliday, hinting at a mysterious prize. And an unexpected, impossibly powerful, and dangerous new rival awaits, one who’ll kill millions to get what he wants. Wade’s life and the future of the OASIS are again at stake, but this time the fate of humanity also hangs in the balance. Lovingly nostalgic and wildly original as only Ernest Cline could conceive it, Ready Player Two takes us on another imaginative, fun, action-packed adventure through his beloved virtual universe, and jolts us thrillingly into the future once again.”

The original novel made its debut back in 2011 and was an instant hit, reaching No. 1 and spending more than 100 weeks on the New York Times bestsellers list. The 2018 film adaptation grossed $582 million worldwide, which made it Steven Spielberg’s highest-grossing film since 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Here’s to hoping Spielberg comes back for the sequel.
Ready Player One drew criticism for its over-reliance on pop cultural references, but that’s also what gave the book much of its charm. In a lot of ways, it served as the precursor for Stranger Things and films such as Stephen King’s IT; and is an absolute must-read for gamers.

Here’s the film’s synopsis: In the year 2045, the real world is a harsh place. The only time Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) truly feels alive is when he escapes to the OASIS, an immersive virtual universe where most of humanity spend their days. In the OASIS, you can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone—the only limits are your own imagination. The OASIS was created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance), who left his immense fortune and total control of the OASIS to the winner of a three-part contest he designed to find a worthy heir. When Wade conquers the first challenge of the reality-bending treasure hunt, he and his friends—known as the High Five—are hurled into a fantastical universe of discovery and danger to save the OASIS and their world.
