The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman is in early talks to direct the Cannonball Run remake.
Described as a “relaunch”, the new Cannonball Run film will be written by Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant of Reno 911! and Night at the Museum fame.
The Mr. and Mrs. Smith and American Made filmmaker will be the third director in the last two years to have expressed interest or have been hired by Warner Bros. to give new life to the cross-country race film. WB initially hired Etan Cohn (Get Hard), however replaced him last year with Central Intelligence director Rawson Marshall Thurber. Thurber is now putting his time and effort into an action film with Dwayne Johnson, Red Notice. Liman is currently in post-production on his young adult novel adaptation of Chaos Walking.
Cannonball Run, released in 1981, was directed by Hal Needham from a screenplay by Brock Yates. Starring in the ensemble cast were Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Adrienne Barbeau, Dean Martin, Jackie Chan, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Dom DeLuise, The film follows the contestants of a massive illegal cross country race that stretches from Connecticut to California.
