The Hollywood Reporter has word that ABC is developing a sitcom inspired by Crazy Rich Asians, the unexpected blockbuster hit of the summer. The script is being penned by Jessica Gao, fresh off her best-animated program Emmy win for Rick and Morty’s “Pickle Rick” episode.
The single-camera sitcom was initially pitched with the title Lazy Rich Asians, which would revolve around the character of Janet Zhao, a first-generation Chinese-American woman who struggles to set healthy boundaries with her very time-consuming family. After her wealthy grandmother dies and names Janet the sole inheritor, she finds herself as her family’s unwilling new matriarch after spending her life trying to keep a healthy distance from them.
In addition to the screenplay, Gao will also executive produce the CBS Television Studios and Imagine TV effort. Brian Grazer, Francie Calfo and Samie Kim Falvey will also serve as executive producers.
Currently, Crazy Rich Asians has earned more than $100 million domestically, with more than $117 million after Labor Day weekend. Internationally the film brought in $10.4 million giving it an international total of $19.9 million. Globally the film has made more than $136.9 million.
