It seems the hype for the recently released Demon Slayer movie is not slowing down. The film has achieved another milestone as it had the biggest first-week home video release in Japan since the Reiwa era began in 2019.
According to Oricon (via Crunchyroll), the regular editions of Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train for DVD and Blu-ray sold 457,000 and 351,000 copies respectively in its first week. For its limited editions, it sold 165,000 DVDs and 338,000 Blu-rays. Altogether, the film sold 1,311,000 copies just in its first week.

To put a bit of perspective on this, the Demon Slayer movie has now pushed the wildly successful Frozen 2 into third place spot in both DVD and Blu-ray categories due to its sales of both regular and limited editions. Not only is it the biggest first-week home release of the Reiwa era, but it is also the first time over a million copies of a film sold in its first week since the first Frozen film released in 2014.
Additionally, these numbers don’t include sales from some independent stores and online retailers. This includes the online Ufotable store, the online shop for the animation studio behind the Demon Slayer anime.
The Demon Slayer movie did exceptionally well at the North American Box Office surpassing $45 million. It is now the number two anime movie of all time in the region, only second to Pokemon: The First Movie, which premiered back in 1999. As announced last week, it is now available to stream on Funimation.

Demon Slayer began as a manga series written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge. It was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2016 to 2020. The anime television adaptation premiered in 2019. The 2021 film is a direct sequel to the first season of the anime.
