As previously announced, the Gintama franchise is in the process of releasing a series of films based on the anime’s Courtesan of a Nation Arc. According to a new website for the anime, opened by Bandai Namco Pictures, the new film, titled Gintama on Theater 2D: Courtesan of a Nation, will be released on June 21, 2024.
Moreover, the website also unveiled the key visual for the anticipated Gintama on Theater 2D Ikkoku Keisei-hen film. The main visual features Sakata Gintoki and Oboro fighting with each other. While the film will cover episodes 257-261, the upcoming screening in Japan will be limited to three weeks. Moreover, the anime will add previously unseen bonus clips from the television series.

According to the anime’s official website, the plot revolves around Gintoki and Tsukuyomi’s quest to locate Suzuran. Eventually, they get disguised as visitors in the Edo Castle, where they sneak in. However, the narrative thickens as they encounter a conspiracy involving the former shogun. This ultimately paves the way for a surprising revelation.
The compilation screenings are a celebratory event for Gintama’s 20th anniversary. While 2023 marked 20 years since the mangaka Hideaki Sorachi debuted the manga, 2026 will mark 20 years since the television series began airing.
As such, the Gintama on Theater 2D Baragaki-hen marked the beginning of the compilation screenings on November 10, 2023. This film was based on the anime Thorny Arc, and it, too, had a limited three-week-long screening period in Japan.
With the film’s grand success at the Japanese box office, despite being a re-edited anime compilation, fans naturally look forward to the upcoming Gintama on Theater 2D: Courtesan of a Nation Arc.
