Apple TV+’s latest documentary series, The Enfield Poltergeist, delves into the infamous case of an ordinary family from Enfield, London. The haunting case first surfaced in 1977 and soon made headlines across the globe, with the Hodgson family at the center of it. A recurrent story in popular culture and the horror genre, it is also a crucial part of the Conjuring franchise.
The story is about alleged supernatural activity at 284 Green Street in Enfield between 1977 and 1979, as reported by Radio Times. In August 1977, sisters Janet and Margaret Hodgson, along with their family and neighbors, allegedly witnessed strange occurrences. These events included furniture moving on its own and the sisters seemingly levitating several feet off the floor.
Enfield House’s story remains a highly debated subject. Many believe that the Hodgson sisters were genuinely possessed, while others remain unconvinced. The Daily Mail reported that a mother-of-four, originally from Lagos, Nigeria, resides in the house now. The outlet also mentioned that the family hasn’t experienced anything unnatural within the house.

Is the Enfield House still there?
Believed to be the base of one of the most horrific poltergeist stories in Britain’s history, the Enfield House on 284 Green Street in London remains intact to this day. As previously mentioned, a mother-of-four, originally from Lagos, Nigeria, currently resides there. The house reportedly has a more modern look to it now and is completely different from what it looked like back in the late 70s.
According to The Daily Mail, the woman, who remains anonymous, revealed that she and her family have not encountered any such ghostly occurrences. The council warned the family about the alleged paranormal activities that occurred at the Enfield House over four decades ago.
The outlet reported that the house is a popular tourist spot. “People from China and other countries who just turn up and bang on the front door,” said the church-going mother. She also stated that they often turn away ghosthunters hoping to get a look inside the house, which has become a popular cultural phenomenon.
Daily Mail’s report further mentioned that the woman claimed she has watched multiple films about the Enfield Poltergeist, including Conjuring 2. Most of these stories allegedly depict the occurrences in her present living room and bedrooms.
The Christian woman reportedly recalled her first visit. She said, “The first time we stepped into the house to look around I did feel goosebumps. That was it. I did not feel any evil spirits and there has never been a ghost.” She further said, “I am not saying that I do not believe in paranormal goings on, but there is nothing happening here. If the spirit was here, he would know to leave. Perhaps there were spirits here many years ago, but they have long gone.”
