Shogun Episode 2 Ending Explained, Spoilers & Recap: What Happened?

Here’s Shogun episode 2’s ending explained featuring spoilers and a general recap of what happened in the latest FX series. Dive into our breakdown and learn about why everyone is after John Blackthorne.

What happened at the end of Shogun episode 2?

Shogun episode 2 ended with a failed attempt to kill John Blackthorne.

After John Blackthorne’s ship arrived in Japan during the 1600s, he was taken prisoner and brought to Lord Yoshi Toranaga in Osaka. With the Lord facing the threat of impeachment, he decided to use Blackthorne to his advantage.

He was aware that Blackthorne’s presence would cause unrest and create a divide between the four council leaders, further delaying his impeachment. So, he kept the Englishman as a prisoner. As a result, Catholic Lords Ohno and Kiyama asked for his execution. But Lord Ishido ordered Kashigi to save him and deliver him to Toranaga for his personal needs.

However, this further worked in Toranaga’s favor, who got a lot of new information from Blackthorne. The Englishman revealed the true intentions of the Spanish and Yabushige, who had divided the world into two halves to claim all the lands with non-catholic rulers for themselves.

Figuring out that the Portuguese wished to claim Japan, Toranaga anticipated another attack on Blackthorne. So, he traded chambers with the ship pilot and just as he thought, an attempt to assassinate him was made. But the killer failed due to Toranaga’s smarts and Blackthorne’s bravery. Just when everyone thought that it was Lord Ishido who made a play to kill Toranaga, the latter understood that it was one of the Catholic Lords.

Why did Lord Kimaya try to assassinate John Blackthorne?

Lord Kimaya wanted John Blackthorne dead because of his protestant religious beliefs. Furthermore, his presence caused a hindrance in the schemes of Lord Kimaya and the Portuguese.

Being the Foreign Relations President and having found out about the secret bases that the Portuguese were building in Japanese regions, Toranaga denied the Black Ship to leave Nagasaki. All that happened because of the knowledge that Blackthorne shared with him. As a result, Lord Kimaya took it upon himself to kill the English “merchant”.

Now, his acts will bring unrest between the council leaders. Since he was the one who broke the peace, Toranaga could gain the advantage against the four leaders who were supposed to sign his impeachment.
