Viewers are asking “Where was Shogun filmed?” and “Was it shot in Japan?”
Here is where the Hulu and FX historical drama series starring Hiroyuki Sanada was filmed.
Where was the Shogun (2024) TV show filmed?
Shogun was shot in British Columbia, England, and Japan.
The Hulu and FX historical drama series was shot in the following locations:
- Ucluelet, British Columbia, Canada
- Port Moody, British Columbia, Canada
- London, England
- Japan
According to producer Erin Smith in an interview with CTV News, the series was primarily shot in British Columbia, Canada. Consequently, the cast and crew primarily remained in Ucluelet and Port Moody for the shoots. The opening scene was reportedly shot in Wya Point Beach in Ucluelet, while other early scenes of the show were reportedly shot here as well.
Erin Smith revealed that many of the Japanese cast and crew members of Shogun were fascinated by how much Ucluelet resembled Japan. (via Screenrant).
Port Moody was also another frequently used location for filming. According to Screenrant, many of the scenes in the film, primarily the scenes involving Osaka Castle, were shot in Port Moody.
The Shogun cast and crew also used London, England as another filming location, albeit to only a minor degree. According to Screenrant, Hiroyuki Sanada, the lead star of the show, traveled to London with some crew members to film just one scene for the series. The scene in question involved Sanada’s character riding a horse by a fire.
Japan was also a filming location, albeit a minor one for the Shogun cast and crew. As per The Cinemaholic, the editors incorporated several exterior shots of Japan. The editors used Japan primarily to establish shots of landscapes and places in the country into Shogun’s ten episodes.
Was the Shogun (2024) TV Show shot in Japan?
No, Shogun was not filmed in Japan.
Although some shots of Japan are featured in establishing shots of the ten episodes of Shogun, the historical drama was not actually filmed there. Shogun was instead reportedly filmed primarily in British Columbia, Canada. (via CTV News).
However, according to Screenrant, the original plan for Shogun was to shoot the show exclusively in Japan. However, production delays and issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic caused shooting locations to change.
