The moment paid homage to one of the craziest moments in the history of the Academy Awards, when a naked man ran on stage at the 46th Oscars in 1974 while David Niven was introducing Elizabeth Taylor. However, Cena was reportedly not fully naked.
At the Oscars 2024 event, John Cena walked on stage seemingly naked to present the Best Costume Design award for Poor Things. Before this, Jimmy Kimmel, who was on the stage, asked audiences if they could imagine if a nude man ran across the stage today.
He was seemingly setting up a bit where a streaker would run across the stage. That was when John Cena came out wearing nothing but an envelope covering his private parts. Unsurprisingly, this elicited an amused response from the audience. (via Variety).
However, John Cena was seemingly not amused by Kimmel’s joke and chastised him saying:
“I changed my mind. I don’t want to do the streaker bit, I just don’t feel right about it. It’s an elegant event, you know? You should feel shame right now for suggesting such a tasteless joke.”
Kimmel in response told the wrestler and actor the bit was supposed to be funny, to which John Cena hilariously retorted, saying the male body was not a joke.
However, as mentioned by Business Insider, Cena was reportedly not fully naked. After he could not move the envelope to open it, there was a quick cut. After that, he was adorned in a curtain-like golden toga.
As mentioned by Variety, this bit by Kimmel and John Cena was supposedly paying homage to a crazy event at the 46th Oscars when a naked man ran on stage as David Niven was introducing Elizabeth Taylor. This was at the height of the ’70s streaking craze, when nude people frequently interrupted public events.
