The Acolyte: What is the Barash Vow? Why Did Torbin Take the Oath?

Star Wars: The Acolyte introduced a new concept to the franchise, the Barash Vow. This was practiced by Jedi Master Torbin before his death at Mae’s hands. As such, fans are curious to understand what the Barash Vow is and why Torbin took the oath.

Here’s an explanation of the Barash Vow’s origins and its implications.

What is the Barash Vow in Star Wars: The Acolyte?

The Barash Vow in Star Wars: The Acolyte is an oath taken by Jedi to remove themselves from the affairs of the Jedi Order completely.

This allows them to fully focus on their relationship with the Force and gain true communion with it. It is perceived as a form of repentance from past mistakes that caused a Jedi to stray heavily from the Jedi Code.

The earliest known practitioner of the Barash Vow as per Star Wars canon is the High Republic Jedi Master and its namesake, Barash Silvain, a female Jedi. 250 years before The Acolyte’s events, Silvain and fellow Jedi Porter Engle undertook a mission to Gansevor to stop a brutal siege that led to the loss of many lives. This was because Silvain disobeyed the Jedi Code by allowing her emotions to cloud her judgment.

Barash Silvain then removed herself from the Jedi Order’s activities. She focused solely on her relationship with the Force in an act of penance. She became the first person to take the Barash Vow. Years later, many Jedi like Kirak Infil’a and Dez Rydan would take the vow after they felt that their purpose strayed heavily from the Jedi Code.

Why did Torbin take the Barash Vow oath?

Torbin took the Barash Vow oath after suffering a dark and tragic event in the past involving Mae and Osha.

Given the nature of the Barash Vow, it is possible that it can be likened to what Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda did following the fall of the Jedi Order. However, in this instance, they removed themselves from the galaxy’s affairs until the right time to train Luke Skywalker.
