Under Paris Ending Explained & Spoilers: Does Lilith the Shark Die?

Viewers are curious about the ending of Under Paris and want to know whether Lilith the Shark dies. Co-written and directed by Xavier Gens, Under Paris is a French horror-action thriller film streaming on Netflix. The plot revolves around Sophia Assalas (Bérénice Bejo), a scientist who loses most members of her team and her husband to a brutal shark attack while working in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Three years later, Sophia discovers that the same shark, referred to as Lilith by her team, has found its way into the River Seine at the heart of Paris. Teaming up with the handsome river police officer Adil (Nassim Lyes), Sophia seeks to put a stop to Lilith and her growing number of children before they cause widespread loss of lives.

Here is an explanation of the Under Paris ending and spoilers.

What happens at the end of Under Paris?

Under Paris ends with Paris being flooded with water infested with mutated sharks.

Lilith and her spawns attack athletes competing in the swimming section of a triathlon, killing dozens. The military tries to shoot the sharks, not heeding Sophia and Adil’s warnings that there are live shells in the river. Soon, these shells are triggered, causing explosions and flooding. Multiple bridges across the Seine are destroyed and the shark-infested water drowns Paris. Sophia and Adil barely survive and look on in horror. As the credits start rolling, the sharks spread to various major cities across the world, implying a bleak future for humanity.

Does Lilith die or is she alive at the end of Under Paris?

Lilith is alive at the end of Under Paris.

Lilith is not an ordinary shark. Although Under Paris is ultimately a monster feature, it has a considerable undertone of environmentalism. This is especially underscored by the subversive ending. Due to her exposure to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, Lilith has mutated to become the first of a new species. Despite repeated attempts by the military and the police, nothing seems to kill Lilith. She procreates through parthenogenesis and doesn’t need a male. As a result, she has numerous children who swim to every corner of the earth at the end of the film and may likely replace the human race at the top of the evolutionary tree.
