Oscar winner Riz Ahmed has been cast in a trippy conspiracy comedy that is set for Prime Video, Ahmed is also on board as the creator and producer of the untitled half-hour project, with Modern Family writer Ben Karlin penning the script.
What is Riz Ahmed’s Prime Video show about?
The story focuses on Shah Latif, who is described as a struggling actor that’s just on the cusp of landing the role of a lifetime. But problems arise when he finds himself pushed into a complete and total existential crisis. It’s also a trippy conspiracy thriller all at the same time. So far, no other casting details are known.
The untitled project marks Ahmed’s return to television after he received two Emmy nominations in 2017: one for his guest role on Girls, and the other for his lead role in HBO’s The Night Of. Ahmed won in the latter category. Though a premiere date is unknown, the comedy will be available via Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories around the world.
The project was developed via Ahmed’s Left Handed production company. It’s executive produced by Ahmed and Allie Moore for Left Handed, and Jake Fuller on behalf of Jax Media. Ben Karlin will executive produce and is showrunning with Ahmed. Roopesh Parekh (Willow, His Dark Materials) will also serve as executive producer. The series is produced by Jax Media and Amazon MGM Studios.
Along with Ahmed and Karlin, the room of writers includes playwright and television veteran Dipika Guha (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Black Monday, Sneaky Pete), creator of the Patriot Act, Prashanth Venkataramanujam, Karen Joseph Adcock (The Bear, Swarm, Atlanta), Azam Mahmood (Industry, Ramy), and novelist Fatima Farheen Mirza.
Ahmed received an Oscar nomination for his leading role in Sound of Metal and won and won the Oscar for best live-action short for 2022’s The Long Goodbye. Karlin won eleven Emmies over the years for his work on Modern Family, in addition to his work on The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.
