Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway Ending: Did Kolkata High Court help Debika?

During the custody battle in Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway, the Norwegian government assigns Daniel Ciupek as the second lawyer to the Chatterjees. He fights against the welfare services and highlights how they did not have the budget to take care of the children they were whisking away. He even alleges that they were guilty of the increase in child prostitution in Norway. Daniel brings up the kindergarten teacher, Berit Hansen, to make a case against the childcare welfare services, claiming that they weren’t taking proper care of them and were wrongfully painting Debika as mentally unstable.

However, when Daniel was off the case, he fights for Norway and against the Chatterjees, putting forward the argument that Debika was not fit to take care of Shubh and Shuchi. Initially, people like Berit Hansen support the system for their 15 minutes of fame. However, after they realize how much pain they had caused, they support Debika and even carry out rallies against the Norwegian government and the justice system. Most of the South Asian citizens in Norway stood unanimously behind Debika, especially the mothers who had been victims of the authorities and were aware of Debika’s abusive husband.

Does Debika divorce Aniruddha?

During the third act of Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway, Aniruddha’s parents refuse to let Debika have her children. The family was keen on taking money from the Norwegian government as Aniruddha’s brother, Anurag, was the children’s foster father. On the other hand, Aniruddha was forcing Debika to divorce him as the legal battles were hindering his chances of getting Norwegian citizenship. He was also aware that Debika would have to deal with a totally different case alongside the custody battle if she moves forward with the divorce.

So, before going ahead with the divorce, Debika gets advocate Ms. Pratap on board to deal with her in-laws. However, Daniel argued that neither Aniruddha’s brother nor Debika was fit to take care of the children. He believed that they should return the children to Norway, where they could receive care, educational guidance, and job opportunities. He also pointed out that Debika or her homeland wouldn’t be able to provide such care.

Did the Kolkata High Court help Debika?

After three days of intense to-and-fros, Pratap proved that Debika was completely fit to take care of Shubh and Shuchi. Daniel also finally agreed with the verdict, but Aniruddha and his parents were unhappy. Before Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway ends, it shares an update on Sagarika, on whom the character Debika was based. She is currently living happily with her children.

The verdict by the Kolkata High Court in favor of Mrs. Chatterjee in the movie sheds light on the importance of empathy. When it comes to a human rights issue, only sticking to facts and figures does not help. Everyone involved in the case had to dig deeper to understand what the actual issues were or if there were any issues at all.
