Bhakshak may be inspired from 2018 Muzaffarpur shelter home abuse case

Inspired by real-life events at an NGO where cases of sexual abuse, rape, and torture were reported, Bhakshak features Bhumi Pednekar in the role of Vaishali Singh, an investigative journalist. She embarks on a mission to expose the truth behind the cases of abuse reported in shelter homes. While the makers have not used the real names, real locations, and cases, there is one case that has a lot of resemblance with the Bhakshak storyline.

The upcoming crime thriller may revolve around the 2018 Muzaffarpur shelter home abuse case. A non-governmental organization called Sewa Sankalp Evam Vikas Samiti in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, ran the shelter home that became the center of the Muzaffarpur Shelter Home case. This shelter home had reported cases of sexual abuse, rape, and torture. According to reports, medical examinations revealed that 34 out of 42 girls, aged between 7 and 17, had experienced sexual abuse and rape.

The prime accused was Brajesh Thakur, and the Saket district court convicted him in 2020. Along with him, the authorities arrested 18 others, including the district child protection officer. Brajesh is currently serving a life sentence.

The sexual abuse happening at the Muzzafarpur shelter home came to light on May 26, 2018, after the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) submitted a report to the Bihar government highlighting the issue.

Stream Bhakshak on February 9, 2024, on Netflix.
