Jang Ki-Yong played the role of a father in the recently finished K-drama The Atypical Family. In a recent interview, the actor shared his experience playing a paternal figure for the first time. Child actor Park So-Yi essayed the role of his daughter.
The Netflix drama The Atypical Family premiered on JTBC on May 4, 2024, and ended on June 9, 2024. It tells the story of the Bok family, who possess superpowers but have modern-day problems that affect their abilities. When a mysterious woman enters their lives, they begin to regain their powers.
In the series, Ki-Yong plays Bok Gwi-Joo, a former firefighter who goes into depression after his wife’s death. His superpower is that he can travel back to past happy moments. However, due to his depressed condition and alcoholism, he drifts apart from his daughter, Yi-Na.
The Atypical Family’s Jang Ki-Yong talks about playing the role of Park So-Yi’s father
Jang Ki-Yong played a father’s character for the first time in The Atypical Family. Moreover, he changed his hairstyle in the series. After the actor’s discharge from the military in 2023, the Netflix K-drama was his comeback project, which turned out to be a hit.
Sharing his experience of playing a father, Ki-Yong told Xports News, “I like experiencing various things. I think it’s important to show that I am good as a person, good as an actor, and capable of doing these things. It was a good experience.”
Jang Ki-Yong also mentioned that he experienced fatherly emotions indirectly through this drama. The actor added, “The word fatherly love is very awkward. I filmed a short period of time while acting with actress Park So-Yi. We filmed together for the last time, and maybe it was because I thought it was the last scene, but when I looked into her eyes, I really felt like a father and So-Yi really looked like my daughter. I had an indirect experience in advance.”
Aside from So-Yi and Ki-Yong, The Atypical Family also starred Chun Woo-Hee, Claudia Kim, and Choi Kwang-Rok. The series is currently available to stream on Netflix.
