Set in 2047, it follows a crew of astronauts sent on a rescue mission, after a missing spaceship, the Event Horizon, spontaneously appears in orbit around Neptune. Searching the ship for signs of life, the rescue crew learns that the Event Horizon was a test bed for an experimental engine that opened a rift in the space–time continuum and left our universe entirely, allowing a malevolent entity to possess the ship.

The film, helmed by Anderson on a script from Philip Eisner (The Mutant Chronicles), featured an ensemble cast led by Laurence Fishburne (John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum) and Sam Neill (Jurassic World: Dominion) alongside Kathleen Quinlan (Apollo 13), Joely Richardson (Color Out of Space), Richard T. Jones (The Rookie), Jack Noseworthy (Undercover Brother), Jason Isaacs (A Cure for Wellness), Sean Pertwee (Gotham) and Peter Marinker (Judge Dredd).

Event Horizon went through a troubled production history, with Paramount rushing filming and editing in an effort to fill the void of James Cameron’s Titanic as that film wouldn’t meet its projected release date, trimming down the original 130-minute cut much to Anderson’s dismay. The film was a critical and commercial disappointment upon release, grossing just $42 million on its $60 million budget but went on to receive a cult following and large sales on home video, initially sparking a conversation between the studio and filmmaker for a restoration cut of the deleted footage, though it has long been lost and therefore unable to be put together. Paramount Television announced development on a series adaptation of the material in 2019 with Adam Wingard (Godzilla vs. Kong) executive producing, though no word has come out in the years since.
