According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has picked up author Megan Whalen Turner’s YA fantasy novel The Thief for a feature adaptation written by Brian Duffield (Love and Monsters, Underwater, The Babysitter).

The Thief is the first book in Turner’s The Queen’s Thief book series and tells the story of a charismatic boy named Gen, aka Eugenides the thief. When Gen is released from prison by a king’s magus, who then coerces him into a quest for a legendary object, the ensuing adventure thrusts him into the center of political machinations, deception, and danger.

Jim Whitaker (Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, Pete’s Dragon) will produce the live-action project that is in early development for Disney+.

Turner’s first book in her series was released in 1996 and earned a Newbery Honor award in 1997. The sixth and final book in The Queen’s Thief series, Return of the Thief, was published this year by Greenwillow Books, an imprint of HarperCollins.
