According to Deadline, Oscar winner Anna Paquin (The Piano) has officially signed on to star opposite Zachary Levi (Shazam!) in Lionsgate’s upcoming biopic drama American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story. Paquin is set to portray the role of the NFL quarterback’s wife, Brenda Warner.

American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story is being based on interviews with Warner and his memoir, “All Things Possible: My Story of Faith, Football and the First Miracle Season. The film will chronicle the true story of Warner, who went from stocking shelves at a supermarket to become a two-time NFL MVP, Super Bowl MVP, and Hall of Fame quarterback.

This project marks the latest collaboration between Levi and the writing-directing team of the Erwin brothers, who are also working together on another Lionsgate pic titled The Unbreakable Boy.
American Underdog will be directed and co-written by Jon and Andrew Erwin (I Can Only Imagine, I Still Believe) with David Aaron Cohen (Friday Night Lights) also serving as the writer. The Erwin Brothers are also attached to produce the project via their Kingdom Story banner alongside Mark Ciardi (Invincible, The Rookie) and Kevin Downes, with Kurt and wife Brenda Warner attached to co-produce. Jim Miller and Chelsea Kujawa are set to oversee the project in behalf of Lionsgate.

Paquin received her first critical recognition with her acting debut film The Piano, which earned her performance as Flora McGrath as Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, making her the second-youngest Oscar winner at the age of 11.
