Lou Diamond Phillips has spoken to Emilio Estevez about Young Guns 3
In a recent interview with Forbes regarding his acclaimed work in the 1987 film La Bamba, Lou Diamond Phillips also took the time to discuss the prospects of another Young Guns sequel. According to the actor, who portrayed Jose Chavez y Chavez in the pic, not only is Young Guns 3 a possibility, but he’s spoken with Emilio Estevez, who is really trying to make the film happen.

“I got that phone call a year ago,” Phillips said. “I know that Emilio has been working on it, and what’s even more encouraging is that John Fusco, the creator of the first two movies, is working on it with him. There’s just enough ambiguity about Chavez’s death that means he might have survived just like Billy the Kid did.”
While neither Young Guns nor its sequel Young Guns II were big hits with critics, both films managed to fare well enough with audiences to score some nice box office returns — $56M and $59M globally — and have since gone on to achieve cult status. A sequel would actually fit quite well in today’s nostalgia-driven climate during which we’ve seen the return of Johnny Lawrence in Cobra Kai, Prince Akeem in Coming 2 America and even Maverick in the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick. With that in mind, Young Guns 3 makes a lot of sense.

For those unaware, 1988’s Young Guns, directed by Christopher Cain, is an action-packed retelling of the adventures of Billy the Kid (Estevez) during the Lincoln County War in 1877-78. The film features an all-star cast that includes Keifer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Charlie Sheen, Dermot Mulroney and Casey Siemaszko.
Young Guns II, directed by Geoff Murphy, takes place after the Lincoln County War and follows Billy over the years leading up to his documented death. Christian Slater and William Petersen (as Pat Garrett) joined returning cast members Estevez, Sutherland and Phillips.
