It has been nearly four months since it was confirmed that Misha Green has been tapped as the new director and writer for MGM’s upcoming Tomb Raider sequel. Now Green took to Twitter to finally share a new update regarding the untitled Alicia Vikander-led project. In her post, the Lovecraft Country creator confirmed that she has already completed her first draft of the script, while also revealing the current working title for the sequel is “Obsidian.”

As Green said, the project still has a long way to go before it makes its debut on the big screen. Most pre-productions on high-profile projects take a year or more before it finally moves on to filming. Interestingly, the unapproved title does have a connection to the source material as it has been frequently used in the video game series such as the obsidian collectibles that Lara Croft must find in Lara Croft Go as well as the obsidian blades included in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which Green has previously revealed to be a fan of.

Tomb Raider 2 was originally set to be directed by Ben Wheatley (Free Fire, High-Rise) with his long-time collaborator and wife Amy Jump attached to write the screenplay. Production on the project was initially planned for last year with a release date originally set for March 19, 2021, but was subsequently delayed due to the ongoing pandemic and WB exiting the project.
Following the delay, it was revealed that Misha Green has been tapped to replace Wheatley and Jump as the director and writer with Alicia Vikander still set to lead the sequel. Plot details on the sequel are being kept under wraps. Graham King will once again produce through his GK Films banner alongside Elizabeth Cantillon via The Cantillon Company.
Based on the video game character, 2018’s Tomb Raider featured Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) as the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.

Tomb Raider was directed by Roar Uthaug from a script adapted by Graham King. It also starred Dominic West (Money Monster, 300), Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight, Django Unchained) and Daniel Wu (Into the Badlands). The 2018 film received mixed reviews from critics and fans and earned a gross of $270 million at the worldwide box office.
