Warner Music Entertainment and HBO announced that the special event will take place on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, and will include an introduction by David Byrne, as well as a never-before-seen conversation with Byrne and Spike Lee, the Oscar and Emmy award-winning director that was at the helm of the HBO special.
American Utopia gave viewers a look into Byrne’s Broadway show that toured throughout 2019 and 2020. Joined by 11 musical artists from around the world, David Byrne will perform songs from his 2018 album of the same name, some Talking Heads tunes, and music from his own solo career as well. The HBO special was critically praised when it launched, earning multiple Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, and more.
“American Utopia was initially released during an unprecedented moment in history, inspiring audiences to not just rejoice in music and dance but also participate as citizens in our democracy,” said David Linde, CEO of Participant. “Almost a year later and fresh off of a celebratory screening to close out the Cannes Film Festival, we’re so excited that audiences can come together for the first time and relive the magic of Spike, David, and the band in movie theaters.”
